In May 2011, the Swedish Brazilian Research, and Innovation Centre (CISB), a non-profit association was founded in Brazil, and despite its short time of establishment, this institution plays an important role in the bilateral cooperation between Brazil and Sweden.

CISB is focused on implementing Research, Technology and Innovation partnerships between Brazil and Sweden. Its mission is to seek solutions to complex global and social challenges that cannot be solved by individual organisations and need to be addressed by multi-institutional networks with players from industry, academy (education and research) and government in open innovation platforms.

Over the last 10 years, CISB has generated unique opportunities for collaboration between the two countries, due to a range of activities it has been carrying out. Connecting different stakeholders, facilitating collaboration and the solution of challenges for its members, organising strategic meetings and events, promoting innovation exchange and training, managing multidisciplinary projects, disseminating results and much more.

Interests

CISB works by facilitating collaboration in 5 different areas: aeronautics, defence and security, sustainable energy, transport and logistics, and urban development.

However, in recent years, the Centre has also been active in the initiative of Corporate Venture, supporting the connection and emergence of new businesses between large corporations and startups in Brazil and Sweden.

Because of its interdisciplinary nature, CISB has a great networking in both countries and has partner organisations in a wide range of sectors, whether from industry, academia or government.

Successful initiatives

In 10 years of operation, CISB launched some initiative, built a project portfolio, and establish some programs as for example:

Mobility Program CNPq-CISB-Saab: CISB signed an agreement with CNPq (Brazilian research funding agency) to promote the mobility of Brazilian researchers to work with Swedish industry and Academia. Since 2012, six calls for projects were launched, 46 guest researchers were granted with scholarships in post-doctorate and sandwich doctorate modalities in renowned universities in Sweden. Strong research network was achieved and Brazil Sweden community in Aeronautics was established as consequence.

Aeronautics Arena: To start the development of the arena, a pre-study was performed on this field in Brazil in 2014, identifying relevant stakeholders and projects in terms of Research & Development & Innovation. Since then, CISB has developed important initiatives and activities to increase the relations between the two countries in the aeronautics area. Examples of this are the starting point of a project portfolio through mobility in the sector and the creation of a workshop series, called Brazil Sweden Workshop in Aeronautics, which is in its 9th edition, having more than 2,000 participates so far.

Future of CISB

Concluding 10 years as a unique and strong innovation partner platform between Brazil and Sweden, we invite new members and partners to join us in co-creating innovation for the future in areas like sustainable mining, smart cities, life science and bio economy. The organization is ready to transfer all its knowledge and expertise to support new stakeholders.
